APPASSIONATO, a PBS documentary in the works by Jackie Paré, tells the powerful story of putting rare instruments where they belong—into the hands of gifted musicians. Thanks to generous donors, the star performers in this film carry these masterpieces—made hundreds of years ago in and around Cremona, Italy—into the world's most famous concert halls but also to some surprising places: prisons, war zones, poor African villages, ICU's, and veterinary hospitals.

These venerable instruments have endured wars, neglect, and the weathering of time, yet they are still begging to be heard. Through collaborations with rare instrument dealers, collectors, interactive museums like MIM, and organizations like Project: Music Heals Us, these works of art and the celebrated musicians who play them give countless people the chance to experience the power of music to transcend, to transport, and to heal.

I recently played in an ICU, right there in the room with people in their last minutes. It forever changed me.
